We’re expecting to see references to Chinese culture and iconography on the runway, and the front row is rumored to be packed with Asian celebrities, pop stars, and A-listers. The show will also debut a collaboration between creative director Stuart Vevers and four Chinese artists; Vogue has an exclusive first look here. Vevers is a well known art buff—he debuted an official partnership with Keith Haring’s estate last year. This project will help introduce these local talents to Coach 1941’s massive global audience. The four collaborators are graphic artist Guang Yu; ink painter and multimedia artist Zhu Jingyi; sculptor Sui Jianguo; and the music collective Yeti Out. Expect the unexpected at the December 10 Fashion Awards in London. Why? Britain’s leading lady of punk will receive the Swarovski Award for Positive Change for her climate-change activism (and, we’d like to think, her general badassery in the fashion realm).
There are 31 pieces in total, including rings, earrings, belts, and necklaces that will range from $50 to $400. On the bold end of things is a large gold snake cuff that wraps around the wrist, while personal jewelry fans will appreciate the delicate chain bracelet and ring that connects via an S-shaped link at the back of one’s hand. (Another version of the bracelet comes in gold and is connected by three rings.) Other statement-making standouts in the collection? The fist-size triangular hoops that feature a gilded snake creeping out of the frame. The international Pre-Fall fashion show tour continues this weekend—about 7,000 miles from New York, where Karl Lagerfeld touched down for his Egypt-themed Chanel show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Tuesday. This Saturday, Coach 1941 is staging its first-ever show in Shanghai, China, for its men’s and women’s Pre-Fall 2019 collections. The event will take place on The Bund, i.e. the popular riverfront shopping, dining, and hotel area near the center of the city, on Saturday evening. Titled “Coach Lights Up Shanghai”—which may be a riff on the city’s towering, brightly lit skyline, or a clue to what we can expect from the clothes and accessories—it’s being billed as a celebration of the brand’s 15th anniversary in China. Since 2003, the country has swiftly become one of Coach 1941’s biggest markets. In fact, China is expected to surpass the United States as the biggest fashion market in the world in 2019—so we have a feeling this won’t be the last time we board a 15-hour flight for a fashion show.
As the models rehearsed inside the space, which featured a replica of Lady Liberty’s torch at its center, Donatella Versace was flanked by her team and looked on with a smile. It takes a village to build one of her mega runway shows. Above, watch how everything came together. Sita Abellan has been flexing her design muscles recently. Since her breakout moment in Rihanna’s infamous video for “BBHMM,” the DJ has cooked up several collaborations, including a raver-inspired collection with Faith Connexion and her very own club kid–inflected peekaboo Fendi bag. Now Abellan, 25, has created something that she can call her own: She’ll drop the first collection from her new jewelry label, Lilith, at the top of next year. The Spanish DJ has a soft spot for snakes—the reptilian motif is something of a signature (it’s featured in her collaboration for Fendi too) and is a recurring theme in her new jewelry. “The snake is my spirit animal because I find that it represents a transformation and change in a life,” she says. The name “Lilith” has a special meaning too. While not mentioned in the bible, Lilith is a well-known figure in Jewish mythology. As the story goes, she was the first woman created before Eve and is often characterized as a demonic creature of the night, something that gives the collection an alluring edge, according to Abellan. “It is a woman who breaks the rules and doesn't care what others think,” she says. “And I felt that was very cool, and that is what I want everyone to think when they wear the jewelry.”
